Meibography

Meibomian glands are located along the upper and lower eyelid margins and are responsible for secreting the oily layer of our tears. The oily component of tears is essential because it reduces the evaporation rate of the watery layer below it and lubricates the front surface of the eyes. Without sufficient smooth oils in our tear film, eyes will feel dry/scratchy, appear red, and have crusty discharge.

Meibography is a specialized digital photography that allows us to capture images of the meibomian glands to assess gland health, measure the thickness of the tear layer, calculate the time it takes for tears to begin evaporating, and the blink rate frequency. With all the information gathered, we are able to assess the health of your meibomian glands, the degree of atrophy, and make treatment recommendations tailored to your needs.
